Buckhorn Ranch: Site and Setting
Buckhorn Ranch has a lot to offer for a new home build. The lot itself is very flat compared to other areas in the valley, which opens the door for so many possibilities.
By orienting the building on the site, we were able to frame many views of the surrounding landscape. Some of the highlights include balconies with views to the south, balconies with views of Whetstone, and framed views of Mt. Crested Butte from the kitchen, living room, stairs, and primary bathroom.
The Brief
The main goal of this build is a forever home for a local family.
The most important aspects were to have enough space for their own use and an ADU to help alleviate housing issues in the area.
Design Response
The views and connection to the site remained major driving forces of the design.
A central circulation space serves as a separation between private residence and attached ADU, while its floor to ceiling windows on both sides provide unobstructed views up and down the valley, from Cement Mountain to the south all the way to Mt. Crested Butte and Gothic to the north.
Distinctive Details
The signature use of architectural materials lies in the wood ceiling above the entryway.
The natural wood panels begin on the underside of the roof overhang above the front entry and continue unobstructed through the building and out through the back of the house. This feature blurs the lines between what is interior and exterior space and helps merge the building with the landscape.

The project is currently on hold, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
