Whetstone House: The Home That Started It All
The Whetstone House is more than a design project. It is the home that helped shape Spellbound Architects.
Originally designed in 2021 as our own family home, this project became an opportunity to explore the architectural principles that continue to define our work today. Although construction has been postponed, the home remains planned for the future and represents our vision of mountain living in its purest form.
Every decision was personal because every decision was made for our own family.
Designed for the Landscape
Situated on a gently sloping corner lot in Crested Butte South, the site opens toward expansive views of Whetstone Mountain across an open meadow.
From the beginning, the design responded to those views. The home’s orientation captures morning light from the south while framing the surrounding mountains through carefully placed windows and outdoor living spaces.
Rather than competing with the landscape, the architecture was designed to become part of it.
A Home Designed for Family Life
The brief was simple: create a home where family and friends could gather comfortably while remaining deeply connected to the outdoors.
At approximately 3,100 square feet, the two-story residence includes six bedrooms, a walkout lower level, and generous gathering spaces that balance openness with moments of privacy.
Every room was planned around daily living, whether returning from a day on the mountain, entertaining friends, or enjoying a quiet morning looking toward Whetstone Mountain.
The Design Response
The architecture embraces a Mountain Modern aesthetic through clean forms, carefully proportioned rooflines, expansive glazing, and a restrained material palette.
Clerestory windows introduce natural light deep into the home while preserving privacy and emphasizing the changing mountain sky. Large walls of glass frame the surrounding landscape, strengthening the relationship between the interior and the outdoors throughout every season.
Rather than relying on dramatic gestures, the design finds its character through proportion, light, and thoughtful simplicity.
Looking Ahead
Although the Whetstone House has not yet been constructed, it remains part of our family’s future.
More importantly, it became the project that established the design philosophy behind Spellbound Architects. The ideas first explored here continue to influence every custom home we design throughout Crested Butte and the Colorado mountains.
For us, great architecture isn’t measured only by what has been built. It’s measured by the ideas that endure and the homes that are worth waiting for.
